Learning Through Blogs

Learning Through Blogs

Blogs are a great way for students to document their thoughts, as well as practice writing but in a meaningful way to themselves.  Teachers can utilize blogs with their students for self reflection and as an assessment to their learning.  While blogs can be used for personal reasons, they can also be educational as well.  Students can use blogs to post what they learned about topics, what they wish to learn, and as a teacher you can determine if they understand those topics through their explanations.

There are a lot of blog sites that are free to use and easy to setup.  One great thing about most blog sites are that RSS feeds are connected to the blog, so you the teacher can use those links to subscribe to and keep updated at all times when students would post (Refer to Keep Updated with RSS Feeds).  Also, setting up a list of student blogs will allow other students to read other blogs and see different points of view.  Students can learn from each other, rather than just the teacher.

One final note, students also are able to take responsibility for their own publications.  This will be a great time to speak to students about internet safety, internet etiquette, and proper writing techniques and grammar because other people can potentially read their postings.
